Quite a few years ago, I built a Grant Thompsoninspired foundry (refractory instead of plaster and sand) that ran off of charcoal and mostly melted aluminum. Well, I''m getting back into the hobby once again as I now have a bit more space available to me, and I would like to quot;upgradequot; as it were to a propane foundry (especially since the charcoal one died in 2014).

Add hot water with stirring to dissolve the salt. Filter and wash several times with more hot water. Boil and then desiccate the the washings to recover the salt. Dissolve

Before I take a load of scrap, I call all of the yards and get the best price. Sometimes this varies as much as .50/pound on copper and radiators and brass and clean aluminum. Wear the proper safety equipment at all times while melting copper. Never breathe in the fumes as they can be toxic and cause lungrelated illnesses. Never pour melted copper on damp surfaces, which can damage both the metal and the surface. Containers and pans used to melt copper should be stored separately from the pans you use for cooking.

Separate the copper shot from sand with a sieve. Copper shot can be picked out. Iron filings can be separated with a magnet. Benzoic acid is soluble in ether, NaCl in water (benzoic acid is somewhat soluble in water too so that must be considered) and sand is not soluble in ether or water.
