Lochaline Quartz Sand Ltd. (LQS) owns and operates the silica sand mine in Lochaline, situated in the West Highlands of Scotland. LQS produces silica sand of exceptional quality and colour: very low in iron and very white. This material is particularly suited for the production of high quality glass. We make two grades of silica: LQS85 and LQS500.
The mine in Lochaline is the only underground sand mine in Europe. The huge deposit of pure white sandstone is extracted by using a room and pillar method. The sandstone is drilled, blasted, loaded into dump trucks and taken to the surface plant, where it is crushed, washed, screened, scrubbed and spiralized to remove impurities.
